Thanks to a partnership with the British Council, we present the short films nominated for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards. The programme includes five films that competed for the prestigious award in 2024:YELLOW, FESTIVAL OF SLAPS, GORKA, SUCH A LOVELY DAY and the winner: JELLYFISH AND LOBSTER.
The British Academy Film Awards for the best short feature film have been held since 1980, and every season since then, we have seen an outstanding selection of films that present, as if in a kaleidoscope, various reflect themes close to the heart. The short film format offers filmmakers a unique platform to pose thought-provoking questions, engage with social issues, and express a deeply personal vision.
Thanks to a partnership with the British Council, we present five titles in the British Film Festival programme that competed for the Golden Mask in this category in 2024. The winning JELLYFISH AND LOBSTER (dir. Yasmin Afifi) gives audiences hope by portraying the extraordinary relationship between two senior citizens - residents of a care home.
FESTIVAL OF SLAPS (dir. Abdou Cissé) is an intense tale that deconstructs the stereotypical model of pan-African parenting in British contemporary reality.
The visually stunning film GORKA (dir. Joe Weiland), through the arrival of a French exchange student in England, reveals an intimate family story about grief and the process of healing old wounds. Watching through the eyes of young Sam, we will also spend a summer day in an English garden in SUCH A LOVELY DAY (dir. Simon Woods), where a seemingly carefree family reunion will not be without surprises.
The final film in the set, YELLOW (dir. Elham Ehsas) takes us to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, where we follow the protagonist on a tense trip to a hijab shop, as she searches for attire that fully conceals her body according to strict local laws.
