When a man commits suicide on Christmas morning, his girlfriend signs off on the novel he has created and sends it to publishers so that, with the money earned, she can escape the darkness of Scotland and start her life again, away from her problems.
Morvern Callar (Samantha Morton), a girl working at a supermarket in a port town somewhere in Scotland, wakes up on Christmas morning to discover that her partner has committed suicide. Among the things he left behind are: a farewell letter written on the computer ('Don't try to understand, it was the best solution' - one can read in it), a music mixtape recorded on a cassette tape, carefully wrapped Christmas presents, money for the funeral, and...a manuscript of his unpublished novel.
Morvern does not inform anyone of this tragic death. She does not get rid of her boyfriend's body (at least not immediately), but instead removes his name from the manuscript and replaces it with her own. She then sends the material to a publishing house willing to release the book.
Having access to her boyfriend's bank account, she decides to use the few hundred pounds he had there. She takes her best friend Lanna (Kathleen McDermott, not previously involved in acting), whom she tells that her lover has left her, on a holiday to Spain.
The second feature film by Lynne Ramsay, awarded two prizes at the Cannes festival, is based on Alan Warner's experimental novel from 1995, telling the story of a young woman embarking on a journey towards a new life, not only in a physical sense, directly captured in the visual layer (from the Scottish greys to the Iberian brightness), but also in a metaphorical sense. However, so much is happening in Morvern's head that - following the path of Ramsay's debut work - everything that unfolds on the screen could be called a dream.
