SEBASTIAN
SEBASTIAN
A British-Finnish co-production showcased in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at Sundance. Max, a 25-year-old aspiring writer living in London, begins a double life as a sex worker to research his debut novel. Polish premiere.
Max is 25 years old and is a young aspiring writer who works on a freelance basis for a paltry sum of money in an editorial office in London. At the same time, in his spare hours, he’s writing his debut novel, which explores the experiences of sex workers. Under the alias Sebastian, he arranges meet-ups where he not only earns extra money but also does research, gathering inspiration, experiences, and, most importantly, emotions that he later channels into his book. When a client asks, “Tell me something about yourself,” Sebastian coyly replies, “What would you like to know?” He knows his main role is to step into character and meet the other person's expectations, often at the cost of his own needs.
Director Mikko Mäkelä (known for his acclaimed film A MOMENT IN THE REEDS – 2018) creates a sensual yet deeply poignant film, filled with the protagonist's confusion, loneliness, and existential pain. In a supporting role, the brilliant Jonathan Hyde brings closeness and hope to the narrative, proving that despite the harsh judgements of modern society, there’s still a chance to build deep and unconditional relationships.
The film competed for the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at Sundance and was also selected for the BFI London Film Festival. We are proud to present the film to Polish audiences for the first time as part of the British Film Festival programme.
