AVALON
If you've ever wondered what CONAN THE BARBARIAN would look like if the set was made up of things found in your uncle's shed and the main characters were played by your work colleagues, you need look no further - AVALON will answer all your questions.
At one stage in his life, he wanted to film his version of CONAN THE BARBARIAN. However, when it turns out that magical artefacts would need to be cobbled together from tools stolen from a building site, the only set design available would be a nearby forest, the role of the beauty would have to be played by a friend's teenage sister, the music would have to be composed by a mate who just happens to have a keyboard in his basement, and the whole thing would have to be filmed with garage sale cameras, most of us give up. Maybe it's even better for the rest of the world.
But Michael J. Murphy, the British director, had other ideas. Over half a century, he produced nearly thirty films at a total cost less than the catering budget on an average Hollywood set. His worst yet most magnificent film, AVALON, released in 1989, tells the story of a valiant knight who rescues a pretty girl and decides to help her free her lover from the clutches of the wicked evil Morgana.
The heroes go on a mission that is as full of action as mushrooming, leaving viewers with little choice but to enjoy this charming adventure with broad smiles on their faces.
