XTRO

The most absurd of the crazy British films from the VHS era. Suffice it to say the main character, Sam, a devoted husband and father, is abducted by aliens and returns after three years to plant seeds that grow into a half-human, half-alien creature. This creature attacks and impregnates an unsuspecting woman, who then gives birth to… an adult Sam, who returns to his family. And that’s just the first twenty minutes of the film.

The low-budget XTRO didn’t earn much respect from critics, but it quickly found its audience when it hit the rental shelves. Horror fans appreciated not only the practical special effects but also the uniquely nihilistic tone and bizarre script ideas, which were often interpreted as nods to the works of H.P. Lovecraft. However, the analytical tendencies of viewers were swiftly curtailed by the director, Harry Bromley Davenport, who candidly admitted in an interview that both he and the other screenwriters indulged in various mind-altering substances during production and threw everything they could think of into the script.

The result is a cursed, drug-soaked nightmare—a sinister twin of E.T. that you won’t forget any time soon. Davenport directed two sequels to XTRO, neither of which has anything to do with the original. Maybe that's for the best.
